About Orthodoxy
History of the Orthodox Church
The Orthodox Church traces its origins directly to Jesus Christ and the Apostles.
Expanded explanation
The Orthodox Church traces its origins directly to Jesus Christ and the Apostles. Following the Resurrection and Pentecost, Christianity spread throughout the Roman Empire and beyond. The Church defended the Christian faith through seven Ecumenical Councils held between 325 and 787 AD. These councils addressed important questions about the nature of Christ, the Holy Trinity, and the proper use of holy icons. In 1054, a separation developed between the churches of the East and West, commonly known as the Great Schism. The Orthodox Church continues to preserve the faith and worship handed down through the centuries.
