About Orthodoxy

Saints and Icons

Orthodox Christians honor saints as holy men and women who faithfully followed Christ.

Expanded explanation

Orthodox Christians honor saints as holy men and women who faithfully followed Christ. Saints are not worshipped. Worship belongs to God alone. Saints are honored and asked to pray for the faithful just as Christians ask one another for prayers. Icons are sacred images that help believers focus on Christ, the Theotokos, and the saints. Icons proclaim the reality of the Incarnation and serve as windows into the life of the Church.

Orthodox significance

Common Icons: Christ Pantocrator, the Theotokos, Saint Nicholas, Saint George, and Saint Demetrios.
